Sharing a vehicle with family and friends
Multi-vehicle families are very common. One person drives to work every day. Another runs errands, takes the kids to school and picks them up later. A third vehicle sometimes exists as a backup, or it is used by the oldest child.
The problem, though, is that most of the time it is just one person who keeps track of the vehicle maintenance. That person books the oil change, and that person is the one who gets asked six months later when it happened.
GreaseNote 1.0 solved half of that problem. Every car in the family in one app, each with its own history and its own reminders. But the log lived on one phone. If anybody else wanted to know whether the tires had been rotated, they had to ask.
GreaseNote 1.1.0 now adds vehicle sharing.
How it works
Open a vehicle, tap share, pick somebody from your contacts. They get a link, they tap it, and the car shows up in their copy of GreaseNote. From that point on you are both looking at the same thing. They log an oil change, you see it. You log a tire rotation, they see it.
Sharing runs on iCloud, which means the same thing it meant for sync. There is no account to create, no password, and no server in the middle.
Everything on the car travels with it. Service visits, costs, photos, odometer history, recalls, reminders. And when a reminder comes due it notifies everybody in the family.
Everybody on a shared car can edit it
There is no view only mode. Share a car with somebody and they can log service on it and correct what is already there.
What stays with the owner is control of the share itself. The owner can see who has access and revoke it at any time, and anybody on a shared car can remove themselves. Delete a shared car and it is gone for everybody. Leave a car somebody shared with you and their copy is untouched.
What it costs
Sharing a car out needs Pro. Accepting one is free.
A vehicle somebody shares with you does not count against the free tier’s one vehicle, and its service logs do not count against the log limit. One person in the house can buy Pro and share the cars out, and everybody else can keep using GreaseNote for free.
